Beta-caryophyllene is now considered a cannabinoid. Caryophyllene, also known as beta-caryophyllene, is a primary terpene responsible for the spicy or peppery aroma found in several cannabis strains. Often referred to as a sesquiterpene, due to its larger molecular size, caryophyllene is also found in black pepper, oregano, cloves, basil and rosemary.

Caryophyllene is the only known cannabinoid to also display characteristics of a terpene. This accounts for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and ability to potentially treat anxiety and depression. Alcohol induced cravings also show promise in being reduced. Binding only with the CB2 receptor also prohibits any added psychotropic activity, unlike several other cannabis terpenes.

Although caryophyllene presents no known psychoactive effects, it is widely considered to provide digestive protection, pain relief, and act as an antibacterial agent. When using strains rich in caryophyllene one may experience a sense of calm in the gut, which may aid in treating anxiety related issues in addition to a feeling of general well being.

Caryophyllene plays a vital role in the synergistic effects of cannabis and is certainly a terpene that should be well sought after in any strain of your choosing. To learn more please feel free to ask any of our knowledgeable patient consultants to assist with any questions you may have.
